MRI. MRI of the brain demonstrates periventricular (subependymal) grey matter heterotopia best seen bulging into the frontal horn of the right lateral ventricle. Additionally the perisylvian grey matter is thicker than normal with nodular grey-white matter junction. Incidental note is made of a cavum septum pellucidum et vergae.

This is now termed "band heterotopia," according to MRI studies (Barkovich et al 1994). Nodular heterotopia is characterized by the periventricular location of the heterotopic neurons close to the subependymal germinal matrix. Nasal glial heterotopia, Brain-like heterotopia, Cephalic brain-like heterotopia," Glial hamartoma, Nasal cerebral heterotopia," Heterotopic neuroglial tissue, and Nasal heterotopic brain tissue: Nasal glioma, seen on T2-weighted coronal MRI MRI brain revealed a band of grey matter located deep to, and roughly paralleling, the cortex and subcortical white matter in both cerebral hemispheres. The abnormal band of grey matter displayed similar signal intensity to cortex on all pulse sequences suggestive of band heterotopia [Figure 1a]. No other structural abnormality was seen on MRI. Neuronal heterotopia refers to brain malformations resulting from deficits of neuronal migration.

More recently, it has come to be recognized that focal heterotopias may also show a range of psychiatric problems, including cognitive and behavioral impairments. However, because focal heterotopias are Subcortical band heterotopia is a condition in which nerve cells (neurons) do not move (migrate) to their proper locations in the fetal brain during early development.

2015-10-06 · Periventricular heterotopia is a condition in which the nerve cells (neurons) do not migrate properly during early development of the fetal brain. People with this condition typically develop recurrent seizures ( epilepsy ) beginning in mid-adolescence. BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Gray matter heterotopia have been divided into three groups based on clinical and imaging characteristics: subependymal, subcortical, and band heterotopia. Nonetheless, subcortical heterotopia can have variable morphologic findings.

Heterotopia means "out of place." In normal brain development, neurons form in the periventricular region, located around fluid-filled cavities (ventricles) near the center of the brain. MRI of the brain demonstrates periventricular (subependymal) grey matter heterotopia best seen bulging into the frontal horn of the right lateral ventricle.

I had my first grand-mal seizure 2.5 weeks ago, and subsequent to that I had a simple partial. My CT Scan in the ER showed I had englarged sacs of fluid behind my sinuses in my brain (everyone has these sacs of fluid, but mine are enlarged), and the MRI shows "congenital heterotopia with gray matter and prevelant white matter".
